RN Initial Application

  • All registered nurses who are currently registered elsewhere in Canada and who wish to register with the CANNN for the first time, and;
  • Canadian nurse graduates who wish to register with the CANNN for the first time
  • Create an account on the Applicant Portal
  • Check your email for a temporary password for your first log in
  • Once signed in, click on Start New Application.  You will be prompted to complete information like places of work, current registrations, etc
  • Upload a copy of your valid government issued photo ID. The ID must be in colour, and includes photo, signature, and expiry date
  • Legal name change: Where there has been a name change, one of the following is required:
    • a marriage certificate, or
    • divorce decree, or
    • notarized statutory declaration of legal name change
  • Pay processing fee – $65.63

Check your Applicant Portal on a regular basis to view what documents are required and/or outstanding

  • Valid government issued photo ID
  • Legal name change: Where there has been a name change, one of the following is required:
    • a marriage  certificate, or
    • divorce decree, or
    • notarized statutory declaration of legal name change
  • Verification of Registration is required from all jurisdictions in which you are current or were formerly registered
  • Form A1 Employer Reference is required from each of your 2 most recent employers.  If you were employed by only one employer for the last 5 years or more, we require a reference from only that one employer. Forms must be sent directly by the employer to CANNN
  • Form A2 Evidence of Practice Hours 2024: For applications of registration starting in 2024, this form is to be completed with hours going up to 2023 and is required from all employers in the past 5 years. Forms must be sent directly by the employer to CANNN. 
  • Form B Colleague Reference Form is required if you have less than five years work experience as a nurse and/or have only had one employer, or if you have only been self-employed as a nurse. The form must be sent directly from the referee to CANNN.
  • Information Sharing Consent Form – this form is used to grant permission to provide updates on an applicant’s registration status to their NT and/or NU employer.  The form is recommended but optional.

Upon application to CANNN for registration, all applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by meeting one of the following requirements:

  • Graduation from an approved Canadian nursing program where theory and clinical instruction was in English (on-line or distance education programs are not acceptable for evidence of fluency); or
  • Employer English proficiency reference showing evidence of safe practice and where the primary language, practice setting, and services are in an English-speaking and writing environment for the previous two years as a nurse in Canada – Form D Employer Confirmation of English Language Proficiency
  • Applicant met the English language proficiency test requirement at the time of registration with another Canadian jurisdiction and has continued to work in an English-speaking and writing environment since that time; or
  • Demonstration of English language competence through successful completion of one of the following tests of English within the last 2 years:

    Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN)
    International English Language System (IELTS) Academic Version.  The online version of IELTS is not accepted

 

  • Evidence of successfully passing an entry-to-practice exam accepted by CANNN is required
  • Transcript Request Form
  • Recommendation Form – Graduate Nurse is required, if not previously provided for a Temporary Certificate. The form must be submitted directly to CANNN by the licensing body of the education institution where an applicant completed their education program
  • Form C Instructor Reference Form – this form is to be completed and submitted by a nursing faculty member from the applicant’s school of nursing and must be sent directly to CANNN from the referee
