Continuing Competency Program for RNs
- As part of our mandate to protect the public through the regulation of nurses, RNANT/NU is required to implement a Continuing Competence Program. The program is grounded in the understanding that all RNs and NPs are competent and committed to lifelong learning. Nurses are autonomous professionals, with a broad scope and significant professional responsibility. This means they must be lifelong learners, who continually assess and improve their practice. The commitment to life-long learning and practice improvement is an important part of being a self-regulating professional.
- The purpose of the program is to promote high practice standards as part of ensuring clients continually receive safe, competent and ethical care, and to support nurses to engage in annual professional development.
- By participating in the program throughout the year, nurses demonstrate to the public they are committed to maintaining their competence to practice and that they take their professional development obligation seriously.
- During registration and renewal, nurses attest to the completion of a continuing competence plan (CCP) that includes two learning goals, and activities to achieve those goals.
- Throughout the year, nurses should be evaluating the impact of their learning on their practice. All nurses who hold practicing registration with RNANT/NU – even if they are not working – must meet these annual requirements.
- In January, 10% of the members are audited and asked to submit their CCP.
The CCP is a confidential document nurses create that guides and records the activities they undertake to meet the RNANT/NU Standards of Practice (2019) and the Code of Ethics (CNA, 2017). Each CCP plan is different, reflecting the creativity and uniqueness of each nurse’s learning journey and is evidence of their commitment to continuing competence in their nurse’s healing journey and is evidence of their commitment to continuing competence in their nursing practice.
